TIGER HILL : LADAKH TRAVEL GUIDE

At an elevation of the 5,353 meters, Tiger Hill alias Surging Sea Hill is the highest point in the region. It is surrounded by the Tolloling Range and other ridges ranging between 5,000 to 6,500 meters. The hill overlooks the National Highway 1D, which serve as a gateway to Siachen Glacier and connecting Leh to Srinagar. Tourists can either see the view of the tiger hill from the distant valley or climb it. And if one plans to climb it then a rich history awaits them. Tiger Hill rose to prominence somewhere in 1999 when Pakistani Army captured it. And the war to recapture the Tiger Hill is considered is one of the most important wars in the history of India.

Tiger Hill Attractions

The main tourist attraction of this hill is trekking. Tourists can climb up to the view points to get a panoramic view of the surrounding area. A few consider camping to enjoy an outdoor evening.There is a Kargil War memorial on the highway road. One can get a good view of the hill from the memorial on a clear day. Inside the Kargil War memorial or the Drass War memorial, you can find a memorial sandstone wall with the names of the soldiers who died during the battle. The Indian flag that is hoisted in the memorial is said to weigh 15 kg. A soldier explains live briefing of the war in Hindi, every day. There is a gallery of photos of the operation, soldier, captured weapons and equipment of Operation Vijay.

Best time to visit Tiger Hill

July to September is the summer season of Ladakh. During this season, the sky will be clear and thus, it is easier to get a good view of the mountain. Moreover, the climate will be suitable for camping and trekking. Winter is the worst time to visit the hill. Winter starts in November and ends in April. This is the coldest time in this region and snowfall will be heavy. The climate can go as low as -60 degree C during peak winter nights. The memorial is open from 7 in the morning until 8 in the evening. The memorial is closed between 23 and 26 July due to Kargil Vijay Diwas. The Tiger Hill is open to public throughout the year.

How to reach Tiger Hill

Drass Valley is easily accessible via the Leh-Srinagar highway. Usually people prefer to cross the Zoji La before sun is out. Sun can melt the glaciers and cause hindrance in the route. It takes around 2 hours to reach Drass Valley from Kargil. During winter, people tend to drive pass the valley and just get a view of the ridges and the hill from the memorial. During summer, people

prefer trekking up the hill. You can find buses and taxis from Srinagar, Ladakh and other areas to Tiger Hill. The nearest railway station to the hill is located in Jammu (395 km away).

Entrance Hill of Tiger Hill

Neither the memorial nor the hills has entrance fee. Tourists have to show ID proof to enter the memorial. Soldiers can check the documents any time during your visit to the hill and memorial. There is no charge for camera or video camera.

Shopping & Dinning in Tiger Hill

There are no restaurants or shops in the Drass region.
