At the heart of Leh lies Jama Masjid, the most revered and ancient mosque of the city. Open only to men, it is a beautiful and stately double domed structure. Located in the main market of Leh, it houses a memorial dedicated to Saint Mir Syed Ali Hamdani known as Shahi Hamdan. This mosque was built in 1666-67 as a result of the agreement between Aurangzeb, the Mughal emperor and the then ruler of Ladakh, Deldan Namgyal. It serves as a symbol of forbearance, and the present structure was reconstructed a few years ago using new techniques.
