Pay Tribute to the Martyrs of the Kargil War

Drass War Memorial is a place to commemorate the past and to give respect to our lost heroes. This attraction in Drass is a must visit place built by the Indian Army in memory of the soldiers who faced the Kargil war in 1999. Amongst all the tourist interest places in Ladakh, visiting this memorial gives a gesture, a respect to our brave heroes. At the Drass War Memorial, there is a War Gallery that showcases the war photos and it also depicts the stories of brave soldiers. An added feature in the memorial is a Sandstone wall which is inscribed with the names of the Indian army personnel who sacrificed their lives during the war.

The memorial is made of pink sandstone and features an epitaph that is dedicated to the selfless sacrifice of Indian soldiers. Army emblems, war document archives and miniatures of Himalayan mountain range are kept in the museum of this memorial. A special war gallery, named after Captain Manoj Pandey, features photographs and seized Pakistani weapons from the war. At the entrance, visitors would find an elegy written by Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Names of soldiers and officers who sacrificed their lives are mentioned on the walls of this war memorial.

Children coming to Drass War Memorial will learn about the historic battle between India and its neighbouring country Pakistan. This memorial will acquaint kids with the selfless sacrifice of those Indian soldiers, who chose their country above everything else.

Drass War Memorial remains open from 10 am to 12 pm and 2pm to 5pm on all weekdays except Sunday.


Best time to visit

Drass is said to be the coldest place in India with the temperatures that drops to -45 °C during winters. So, the ideal time to visit Drass is during summers from June to early September.


Getting There

You can reach Drass War memorial via road from Srinagar to Leh. This attraction is located just a few hundred metres past Drass town. However, to get to Drass, you can get regular buses and taxis from Srinagar via National Highway 1.
